Reiki is a Japanese word representing Universal Life Energy, the energy which is all around us. Reiki, when activated and applied for purposes of healing, addresses body, mind and spirit. It accelerates the body's ability to heal physical ailments and opens the mind and spirit to the causes of disease and pain, the necessity for taking responsibility for one's life and the joys of balanced wellness. The Usui System of Reiki is a natural healing art which uses Reiki in these ways.
This system was born out of the experience and dedication of Dr. Mikao Usui, 1865 to 1926, a Japanese pioneer physician and spiritual seeker, who, about a hundred years ago, undertook an extensive study and in depth search of the healing phenomena of history's greatest spiritual leaders. Through travel, study, research and meditation, he evolved a healing system based on ancient Buddhist teachings written in Sanskrit. He spent the rest of his life practicing and teaching this method of natural healing.
The Usui System of Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who are trained in the original traditions of Reiki and whose personal and professional lives are committed to this healing art and the lifestyle which it engenders.
A slightly different tradition describes Dr Usui as a Japanese
seeker who devoted his life to the quest for a form of healing that could be
passed on systematically to others.
After a long search through many existing healing traditions, his answer came
in the form of a vision and initiation alone on a mountain.
Dr Usui then initiated others into his Reiki healing system. One of
these was Dr Chujiro
Hayashi, who, after Dr Usui died, ran a Reiki clinic in Tokyo
until 1940.
Then, Reiki spread outside Japan to Hawaii and later to the U.S.A. and
Canada through the hands of Mrs Hawayo
Takata. After Mrs. Takata died in 1980, her grandaughter
Phyllis
Lei Furumoto became our current Lineage Carrier or Grand Master of the Usui
System of Reiki Healing.
From the 22 Reiki Masters initiated by Mrs Takata, Reiki has spread like
wildfire all over the world. Now there are thousands of Reiki Masters and at
least two million people using Reiki in their lives. In the process of this
rapid expansion, many very different forms and schools of Reiki have
emerged. So we would encourage you to choose your Reiki Master with great care,
and to take all the time you need to really find the right one for you.
